The Home Energy Alliance is dedicated to supporting consumer choice in home energy generation, distribution, and storage.

Home solar is an essential part of the clean energy future. Families that use home solar deserve to be treated fairly for their contributions to their local grid.

Public policies should empower families to make smart choices that create cheaper, cleaner, more reliable home energy for all.

Our Priorities

Nearly 5 million homes across the country have solar. Home solar empowers consumers to generate their own energy at home, reducing strain  on the grid and enabling them to share excess clean energy for use by their neighbors in their community. Paired with energy storage, home solar also allows consumers to store excess energy for use at home during blackouts  or reduce usage during peak hours, creating a more reliable, affordable, and flexible grid for all.

Doubling down on home solar and storage could save all ratepayers in the U.S. nearly $500 billion by 2050. By limiting the reliance on energy from the grid during peak hours, consumers have control over their energy costs, and excess energy shared on the grid with neighbors helps provide low-cost, renewable energy to everyone in their communities. Home solar and storage generates power where it is used, avoiding costly investments in transmission lines or distribution grid upgrades.

In 2022, 140 million people in 40 states dealt with blackouts or calls to conserve power.  Home solar helps reduce energy demands at critical times, reducing the burden on the entire grid and improving reliability for both solar consumers and their neighbors. In moments where blackouts occur, storage makes sure people aren’t in the dark, keeping families safe.

If we installed solar on all suitable rooftops in the United States, solar on homes, apartments, and businesses would generate 40% of U.S. electricity needs. Home solar is an essential part of the clean energy future, and offers the fastest installation timelines of any clean energy option. Nearly 7 GW of home solar was installed in 2023,  – the equivalent of 7 nuclear power plants! With a quick development timeline, home solar is essential to stay on track to meet our clean energy goals.

70% of all solar careers are driven by local solar. More than 200,000 workers are in home solar, rooftop solar, or community solar. These are family-supporting full-time careers in installation and maintenance, and are jobs that can’t be outsourced. People work where they live, and these careers offer pathways for advancement.
